DBLSPK: 菠蘿麵包Pineapple Bun by Howard Dai co-produced with rice & beans theatre
DBLSPK highlights the linguistic and cultural diversity of our theatre community. The series began in 2017 with rice & beans theatre and Boca Del Lupo, inspired by their common interest in investigating what is lost and gained in translation.
Working with artists who include elements of translation or multilingual storytelling, these residencies examine the relationship between language and culture within performance. At the close of each residency, excerpts from a play are performed in both original and translated languages. In addition to sections of staged readings, the artists engage in conversation with the audience, taking a deep dive into research topics related to the project.
So far, DBLSPK has featured artists who work with Spanish, Cantonese, Punjabi, Farsi, French, Korean, Polish, and Tagalog.

A free public showing of a 20-minute excerpt will be held on January 29th, 4 p.m. at the Playhouse Studio, and there will be a post-show discussion after the performance.
菠蘿麵包Pineapple Bun is a new play by Howard Dai. Revolving around a bakery in Taipei, the protagonist must confront their diasporic guilt as they visit their hometown. It is a study in nostalgia. A poem to the moon. A lottery. A legend. A tribute. A futile gesture. A testament of blind faith. A celebration of everyday hope.

Artist Bio
rice & beans theatre
rice & beans theatre was founded in 2010 by Pedro Chamale and Derek Chan. Besides Vancouver, rice & beans theatre has also produced original work for audiences in Toronto, Richmond, Nanaimo, and Victoria. In 2018, rice & beans theatre was nominated for a Dora Award for its production of Sik Zeon Tin Haa with Cahoots Theatre in Toronto. In 2019/20, Chicken Girl was nominated for 3 Jessies in Vancouver. rice & beans theatre tells stories of where we come from and where we are going, by ways of experimentation with languages and the theatrical form. rice & beans theatre focuses on the creation, incubation and production of original performances. Through rigorous experimentation, with intimate passion and delicate violence, rice & beans write, adapt, and devise work that is relevant and artistically responsible. We value theatre that is accessible, honest, uncompromising and personal.
Howard Dai
Howard Dai is a Taiwanese actor, writer, and theatre artist. As a multilingual artist, he was most recently a co-creator/performer of 蝦仔 Little Shrimp, a bilingual audio play about intergenerational relationships within Chinese culture (Carousel Theatre). He is currently writing a new play 菠蘿麵包Pineapple Bun that explores nostalgia and diasporic guilt set in quotidian Taiwan, supported by rice & beans theatre, PuSh Festival, and UK’s Royal Court Theatre. Some other co-creation/performance credits in 2021 include: Passenger Seat, a theatre-concert (Library Performance Co.); Collider, a VR devising ensemble (Single Thread Theatre). He also went on a digital tour across Canada as a co-creator, performer, and digital programmer of New Societies (re:current theatre). Howard works on the unceded land belonging to the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Skxwú7mesh, and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ Nations; colonially known as Vancouver. He is currently an Associate Artist with rice & beans theatre, and is a graduate of Simon Fraser University’s School for the Contemporary Arts
