Booming with 25 electrifying years of music, culture, and politics – A Curatorial Statement by Bill Millerd

Watching Rick Miller perform his one-person show in this breathtaking and mixed-media spectacle is astounding.  Yes the show, BOOM, explores the impact of the baby boom generation by transporting us through 25 electrifying years of music, culture, and politics but this performance highlights what can be done with imagination and daring.

Rick first came to us at the Arts Club with MacHomer which we presented at the Stanley Theatre. Rick has a talent in shaping disparate material and in BOOM, a production he has written and directed, he uses vivid, cutting-edge video and projection design that he developed in a series of workshops at Ex Machina’s La Caserne in Quebec City (Robert Lepage’s company).  The focus of the show is the turbulent post-war years between 1945 and 1969, and the generation they shaped.  Having watched it several times, I feel it is much more than a history lesson, BOOM is a one-of-a-kind experience for all generations. The play entertains, educates, and empowers us by immersing us in our past. It is a visual feast that appeals to young people and adults. Moreover, it acquaints us with a highly imaginative homegrown talent: Rick Miller.
