World Theatre Day
March 27, 2023
There is something extraordinary about joining together in a room for the shared experience of live theatre. The energy of the audience; The chatter of folks who only see each other like this, in Community, who embrace as old friends; The promise as you enter a performance space of being transported elsewhere as you glimpse a piece of the set; The anticipation to meet the vibrant characters who are about to be brought to life on stage. It’s the magic of being swept up in another’s story, and sharing that experience with others who love theatre and the performing arts as much as you.
Today we celebrate World Theatre Day. Since 1962 World Theatre Day has been celebrated by theatre lovers, professionals, organizations, universities, and performing arts schools… How lucky are we, then, to be able to program a Festival where non-traditional, delightfully unconventional, immersive, profound, diverse, inclusive, and sometimes obscure theatre has the opportunity to thrive?
Theatre is at the heart of a robust performing arts lineup every year at PuSh. We are grateful for every creator, performer, and patron who has supported us in bringing local, national, and international works to the stage. This annual day also aims to remind politicians, governments, and institutions about the potential of art for economic growth.
Want to help support theatre today in celebration and honour of World Theatre Day?
Here are a few ways you can show your support:
1. Go see shows. See Community Theatre. See Professional Theatre. Attend an opening at your local Company’s latest productions. Support the traveling productions that come through the city. Buy a ticket and join the shared experience. Better yet, buy two and take a friend who you can chat about it with later.
2. Write letters to government officials in support of your belief in the value of live performing arts. Support publicly funded theatre programs (especially in schools).
3. Make a donation to your favourite Organization. Most Theatre companies and performing arts organizations like PuSh, who support the development and presentation of new works, need private donations to survive. Without your donations, many performances would never have been possible… we know our Festival wouldn’t be.
