1) What motivates your work as an artist?
To create things of beauty that make people think and feel.
2) What does being part of PuSh 2020 represent for you?
I’ve only worked in the U.S. so it’s an honor to be part of a larger, global community. I’m excited to see others’ work as well as share my own.
3) Is there anything you want audiences to keep in mind while experiencing your show?
That its subject matter is deeply serious despite the humor and at times, silliness.
4) How might we see PuSh 2020 themes of subversion or vulnerability reflected in the work?
Carmen’s writing is deeply personal, which is inherently vulnerable. Her politics are also deeply personal. It’s all about revolution, and you can’t get any more subversive than that.
5) What other PuSh show would you most like to see?
There’s so many! I’m curious about FRONTERA, maybe because it’s related to our work.
6) What qualities do you most admire in other artists?
Discipline, creativity, courage, innovation.
7) Any advice for emerging artists?
Who you are is important to the work. Bring it!
8) What do you do when you’re not working or making art?
I teach graduates and undergraduates at University of California, Irvine.
9) What about Vancouver most entices you?
There’s not a lot of pretense—-what you see is what you get. I like that.
10) What is your biggest art-making wish or fantasy (if money were no object)?
I’d love to see Anywhere But Here tour all over the world. People need to see this beautiful play and hear it’s message.

A graduate of the Yale School of Drama, Juliette is most known for directing her productions of LYDIA by Octavio Solis. Premiering at Denver Theater Center, LYDIA went on to subsequent productions at the Yale Repertory Theatre and the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. The New York Times quoted the work on LYDIA as “Seductive and strong. Juliette Carrillo has directed with enormous skill and knowing compassion.” Juliette has directed critically acclaimed productions across the country, including plays at Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Seattle Repertory Theater, South Coast Repertory, Magic Theatre, Alliance Theatre, Arizona Theater Company and, Actor’s Theatre of Louisville. She is known for developing new plays and has done numerous workshops in regional as well NYC theatres such as The Public, New York Theatre Workshop, INTAR and The Women’s Project. She is a recipient of several awards, including the prestigious National Endowment of the Arts/Theatre Communications Group Directing Fellowship and the Princess Grace Award. She was also chosen by Sundance Theater Institute to participate in the Sundance/Luma Foundation Theater Directors’ Retreat in Arles, France.
