VIOLETTE

Showing on Jan 26–Jan 30

Playing at Roundhouse Performance Centre

Joe Jack et John (Canada)

Violette has a story to tell. This utterly unique work brings viewers one by one into her private realm; it’s an experience that mixes live theatre and Virtual Reality, making use of both physical immediacy and digital world-building. The journey begins with a welcome from Violette; you are invited into her bedroom and asked to listen to a story. Then comes the dive into VR: donning a headset, you enter a 360° recreation of the dwelling, where a dark, fantastical tale will unfold…

In its rich sensory envelopment, VIOLETTE has the power to transport; as a moral statement, it has the power to transform. The work may tell the story of one woman on the margins of society, but it echoes far and wide in its implications, and the VR setting serves to create a powerful empathy. This digitally conjured world is realistic enough to convince, magical enough to enchant, and dark enough to serve as a shadowy likeness of our own shared reality.
